Why is pepperoni pizza so popular?

The most popular pizza topping is pepperoni. Pepperoni is an Italian-American type of salami made with a cured beef and pork. The pepperoni is then seasoned with paprika and chilli. Its said that billions of dollars are spent each year on pizza, from your local pizzeria to the main big pizza chains such as Pizza hut, Dominoes Pizza, Papa Johns, and Little Caesars. Peperoni pizza is by far the most ordered pizza in most establishments.

Where does pepperoni pizza come from?

Although pizza originates from Italy, the pepperoni pizza was born in New York where Italian migrants migrated to the area. Italian butchers around the little Italy and Manhattan area where providers of some of the best pepperoni/ salamis produce used in local Italian restaurants.

How to make pizza dough no yeast

So why no yeast? This recipe is super easy to make with minimal ingredients as it cuts out the rising step traditionally done when making pizza dough with a yeast starter. The raising agent is self raising flour mixed with thick set Greek yogurt which creates the a light and fluffy pizza dough in minutes!

How to make homemade pizza sauce

Homemade pizza sauce is super easy to make two ways, a cooked sauce method or authentic method of just using canned chopped tomatoes. The best type of accessible tomatoes for pizza sauce are canned San Marzano Tomatoes from Italy which you can find in most supermarkets. Alternatively use the best organic canned tomatoes available to you.

Cooked tomato sauce – to make the pizza sauce blend tomatoes, Italian seasoning, olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, salt, and pepper until smooth. Boil on a low simmer for 30 minutes – 1 hour. The longer you cook the sauce for the richer in flavour and thicker in consistency.

Quick no cook pizza sauce method – For a simple pizza sauce, crush some canned plumed or chopped tomatoes, season with Italian herbs, salt + pepper.

How to make homemade pizza crust

An easy way to make a crispy thick crust is to simply fold over and crimp the edges of the pizza dough. Repeat until there is a crust around the whole circumference of the pizza dough. Ensure to gently push down on the section where the folded pizza dough meets the base of the pizza to ensure the crust does not unfold whilst baking. For an even more amazing crust you can line the edge of the pizza dough with mozzarella stick cheese and then fold over the dough. This will result in a delicious stuffed crust pizza with oozing with cheese just like you would find in the big pizza chain restaurants Dominoes & Pizza Hut .

How to make NO YEAST – Homemade Pepperoni pizza Step by Step

  • Preheat your oven to 200 Celcius / 400 Fahrenheit / Gas mark 6.  Place your oven tray or pizza stone into oven to pre heat also.
  • To make the pizza base lightly flour a clean surface, place the NO YEAST PIZZA DOUGH ball/or ready to roll pizza dough onto the surface/worktop. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a circular pizza disk shape, with a thin crust.
  • Carefully take your pizza stone/tray out of the oven. Place the rolled-out pizza dough on top of the hot tray/stone. You can turn the edges of the pizza in on itself and crimp to achieve a thick crust or leave as is. Use a fork to poke the base slightly to prevent rising in the centre. Ensure not to poke the fork all the way through the pizza base.
  • Add a layer of chopped tomatoes, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese and then finally top with pepperoni slices.
  • Add your pizza sauce and toppings, then bake for 12 – 14 minutes

How long to cook pizza dough

The cooking time for pizza will be a lot faster if baked in a traditional wood fire Italian pizza oven or in a barbeque. However, in a conventional oven pizza will take 12 -14 minutes to bake.

What temp to cook homemade pizza

For my no yeast pizza dough recipe preheat your oven to 200 Celcius / 400 Fahrenheit / Gas mark 6.  Put your oven tray or pizza stone in the oven to pre heat. Once you have made the pizza dough carefully take the stone/tray out of the oven and place the rolled-out dough on top. Add your pizza sauce and toppings and then bake.

Pizza topping ideas

There are so many other pizza other toppings! The beauty of making homemade pizza is that you get to choose your own ingredients. Here is some toppings inspiration to add to your freshly made dough.

MARGARITA

A simplistic but authentically Italian pizza. Made with only 4 ingredients; crushed Italian San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese & topped with fresh basil.

BARBECUE BASE

Authentic pizza recipes use a tomato sauce, however a more modern take on the pizza has seen the innovation of BBQ sauce bases. Usually paired with chicken or a “Meat Feast” selection of ingredients such as; cooked sausage meat, bacon, ham, mushrooms and onions.

HAWAIIAN PIZZA

Pineapple and sliced ham paired with cheese and a tomato sauce base😊 It’s a love hate pizza topping combination, some people love it and some don’t, mainly due to the sweet pineapple paired with the savoury ingredients.

Recipe Tips

Make sure you add your pizza stone/Oven tray into the oven in advance to preheat to ensure you have a super crispy base + speed up cooking times

Do not put too much sauce and toppings on the pizza dough, as you risk the pizza base becoming soggy and it will not crisp up in the oven

You can also use pre-made ready to roll pizza dough for this recipe to cheat and save time! Check the cooking instructions and the packet as cooking times will vary.

The best type of tomatoes for pizza sauce are canned San Marzano Tomatoes from Italy which you can find in most supermarkets or online.

For a richer cheese taste, you can substitute the mozzarella cheese for mature cheddar cheese
